Lounge on the Farm License Announcement

7th December 2011

Lounge on The Farm, the annual music festival that takes place at Merton Farm in Canterbury, has decided to renounce its current license and embark upon applying for a new one for 2012.

The Canterbury City council have confirmed that the surrender of the license in no way means that there will be no festival for 2012. However, the festival organisers want to ensure that the event is stronger and safer than ever, and the application for a new license will allow for this, as well as sustained growth in future years.

By surrendering the licence, Lounge on the Farm hopes to show its commitment to working with Kent Police rather than against them. A good relationship with Kent Police is vital to the safe running of the event.

 ”We feel the best way to progress onwards is to voluntarily relinquish the current license held for Lounge on the Farm and take out an application for a new one for 2012. This will allow us to discuss the issues of 2011 and improve our working relationship with Kent Police. With a new license we can take another step towards a safer, more secure event that is far better positioned to progress and build on the fantastic success we have enjoyed over the last few years.”

Indeed this success includes the many awards the festival has accrued in recent years. In 2009 Lounge on the Farm’s awards included ‘Best Line-Up’ in the UK Festival Awards, ‘Best of the Family Festivals’ by The Times and ‘Best Music Festival for Foodies’ by The Guardian. In 2008, 2010 and 2011, the festival was awarded the prestigious ‘Greener Festival Award for Sustainability’ for its efforts to create a clean and environmentally friendly event.

In addition to industry recognition, Lounge on the Farm has proved widely popular with the general public and local Kent community. Testament to this is the 700 signees a petition received in just 2 days that was aimed at the council in favour of the festival last week.

We just wanted to say a big thank you to all the teams that made the effort and came down to The Academy at Brunel Students Union last Wednesday. A big shout goes out to Urban Knights and Coop-Deejays for smashing the tunes and getting us dancing… you guys rock!

The Mexican tennis players, the line dancing cowboys, the rugby league lady boys, the Where’s Wally Hotties, the Onesie crew…  and all the rest of you who donned the fancy dress and came along for a good night – WE SALUTE YOU!  The SV Girls had a lot of fun and yes, got a little carried away with the stickers. Using an entire roll to fashion a new style of onesie! (This had better be coming on tour…)

Tonight the man of the moment, Example (the rapper, whose real name is Elliot Gleave), will descend upon Manchester bringing us his third major headline tour – Example Live; the location of choice – the Manchester O2 Apollo and the crowd knows exactly what to expect: “Boundless energy, an onslaught of monster rave anthems and backed by a full on band the Example live experience is a force to be reckoned with – energy levels are kranked up to the max and feet aren’t touching the ground.”

Previously performing at Outgoing events such as Summer break, BBL and is set to play Snowbombing in 2012, Example is an artist who is very close to our hearts,and is now a part of the Outgoing family.

BUDS 2011 (Hillend, Edinburgh)

The longest dry-slope in Europe was the setting for the biggest gathering of students Snowsports enthusiasts in the UK. Over 2000 attended for a weekend of freestyle, racing and the infamous après that is synonymous with all BUSC (British University Snowsports Council) events.

We arrived with Pammy (sporting a fetching re-spray) at 7am on Friday and set up for an intense day of competition with many of the Universities coming away with Outgoing this year competing hard to get on the podium.

Outgoing even provided Morph Suits as to cut down on wind resistance, the SHU Snow guys looked very fetching but wind resistance was the last thing on their mind!

With students from nearly every University in the country competing in Giant Slalom, Slalom, Dual Slalom, Big Air, Slope style and the inter-University banter reaching new levels of intensity, the whole of Hillend was rocking to the sound of the Red Bull Pizgauer blasting out tunes to keep the masses entertained.

Friday night was held at the Ocean Terminal shopping centre where the organisers had turned a normal shopping centre in to a club for one night only!  With Jaymo and Andy George on the decks (warming up for their appearance at Snowbombing next April no doubt!) they kept the crowd pumped until gone 3 am.  This probably explained the bloodshot eyes and horrific hangovers on display by many of the students ready to race at 9am the following morning!

The standard of freestyle skiers and boarders in the UK has exploded in the past couple of years and for the first time in BUD’s history a double front flip was landed. The crowd went nuts.  This was followed by two skiers then dropping switch rodeo 900’s as if they were doing it in their sleep.  The pros in attendance couldn’t believe their eyes.   Neither could we!

The legendary Saturday night ball was as daft as can be with the BUDS attendees finally getting their cheesecake after waiting for a year (the 2010 ball was well… you will have to ask the details of this  from those who attended!).  Urban Knights laid down a jaw-dropping audio visual set and lifted the roof off Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange.

So as we are driving home this Sunday afternoon, Pammy in tow and the memories of another successful BUDS still fresh in the mind- spare a thought for our very own Plymouth Snowriders who have a lovely 12 hour journey back home…

It was my second week at Outgoing and a chance to get to know everybody a bit better. As with any Outgoing social there was plenty of drink involved. Everybody was in high spirits, especially Dave (MD), who after announcing that we would be going bowling this week had been sneaking off to the bowling alley everyday to practice. Hats off to him, he absolutely smashed it.

For those of us who weren’t budding bowlers, it was a blast from the past. The mood lighting was low, the disco lights turned on and the bowling began, everyone with their own individual style.

Fritz (Designer), with his Grease Lightning hair, was pulling some crazy John Travolta moves as he slid along the floor on his knees, a technique which earned him multiple strikes. Shame it didn’t last for long. It all went downhill after he threw the ball backwards at us un-expecting spectators behind.

Parkman’s (sales) technique was something to be questioned, hitting a pillar instead of the pins, fortunately missing any bystanders, who looked on in absolute dismay.

Sian’s (SportsVest assistant) approach was somewhat childlike and consisted of running towards the lane like a rag doll and hurling the ball between her legs. A style you definitely would not want to copy but earned her some grandeur.

We were introduced to the new team member Alex (Head of Technical)…poor guy. He was thrown in at the deep end, but in true outgoing style he lapped it up and was the last man standing.

A bit of competition started when our Systema Champion Sunny (Technical) took on T Pain (Sales) in a punch machine showdown. Sian then gave a valiant attempt to which Becky returned with absolutely nothing. A fly could do more damage than our lovely Becky (Technical).

The next few hours consisted of beer, mojito’s, Jaeger bombs, Sambuca, lost phones, plenty of joviality and the rest, well, is a bit of a blur!

To say the least we are all feeling a little bit fragile today but partying is what we do best and everybody came into work today…except one (you know who you are!)

All in all a fantastic night, bring on the next social!

Waking up on Wednesday morning with a fresh head meant that we could get the Surfers Village for Outgoing’s 2011 BUCS Barefoot Wine Surf Championships looking ship shape.  With banners and flags all fluttering in the wind, we took an evening visit to Newquay town centre to enjoy a night of pool playing and to sample a few glasses of barefoot wine.

Thursday consisted of mini bus after mini bus of keen surfers arriving into the onsite bar where a selection of surf DVD’s were being premiered. Like previous years the University of the West of England were the loudest and proudest surfers to arrive in the surfers village… chanting, long-arming and dancing the night away.

Great waves and blue skies were on offer on the first day of the competition, with all surfers taking to the water for the first round of heats.  Defending Champion and favourite, Gordon Fontaine of Bournemouth University wowed the thousands watching with some spectacular skills, as did local boy Matt Rodwell from Plymouth University.

After a hot shower, warm grub and a few bevs, everyone headed to Sailors Club for a night with Stanton Warriors. With almost every university surf club from around the UK in one venue and an eclectic warm up set from local surf pro and aspiring DJ, Josh Hughes. The Stanton Warriors then ripped the lid off it – the crowd were going mental… the dance floor was full and sweating! Then Outgoing born and bred DJ Archibald took to the stage for his debut and played a dirty dubstep set which went down a storm – followed the Stanton Warriors nicely and maintained the energy.

Saturday saw even more blue skies and an estimated crowd of over two thousand spectators watched the second round of heats as the competition started to get serious, with skilful displays from a range of competitors in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Saturday night’s closing party onsite with DJ PUDDLES got off to a slow start as the whole site decided to sit in their vans and watch 2 hours of X FACTOR, and get ridiculously drunk.. a dreadful crime if you ask us. Alas when the clock struck 11, the people came out to party. Headliners the URBAN KNIGHTS played a stonking audio visual show.

Sunday morning saw the men’s and women’s semi-finals and once again Bournemouth Universities’ Gordon Fontaine took home the men’s title after beating off a fierce challenge from Plymouth’s Jonathan Waugh in the final, whilst in the women’s competition Plymouth Universities Holly Donnelly Rosie Ellis from Exeter to win the women’s trophy. The team results are in the process of being finalised.

As the sun set on Sunday evening over the glorious Cornish coastline, we toasted the success of another amazing BUCS Barefoot Wine surf champs. Over the weekend we met hundreds of lovely surfers from Unis as far away as Dundee! We enjoyed stunning weather in the most colourful of seasons and we made the most of the brilliant parties with so many talented DJ’s. So to conclude: bring on Outgoing’s BUCS Barefoot Wine Surf Champs 2012!

The group of individuals were selected as potential company representatives to work on Outgoings diverse array of travel products and it is safe to say everyone stepped up to the plate!

The intense weekend of training began in the UK on Thursday when everyone boarded the outbound coach to Austria, 27 hours later the Tyrolean mountains were a welcome site!

The tough schedule of late nights and early mornings tests the stamina of the most seasoned rep but mix in daft games, fancy dress, treasure hunts and a serious amount of Austrian après ski fuelled by an unhealthy supply of Redbull and you’re sure to create a truly epic trip.

We here at Outgoing are now in the enviable position of being spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting staff for this current season, but one thing’s for sure … It’s gonna be a big one!

Amazingly, the crew managed to bag some highly exclusive acoustic sets from some of the festivals artists, including some of the headliners. These were shot amongst the barley fields located next to Merton Farm, allowing for some sumptuous scenes as the musicians played out to the sun setting across the farm in a highly unique location.
